There is more to a good defense attorney than knowledge of the law. Most lawyers will disclose their knowledge to your satisfaction at the initial consultation.
After all, you are not a DUI lawyer. Therefore you will need to rely on your own instincts in hiring them.
Ask them questions about how they handle return calls. Are they prompt?
Find out if your attorney if he ever takes breaks from his practice to relax. You don’t want to hire someone that puts themselves under so much pressure that they will crack right when you need them most.
Ask your prospective attorney if he every takes vacation time to attend continuing education at out of town locations related to DUI defense. This shows that he can relax and still find time to be productive.
Talk about the lawyer’s relationship with the prosecutors he works with. Is he known as someone who will fight for his clients, or does he just fight with prosecutors?
Also, there is a difference between being diligent and being unprofessional. Mostly it is a matter of degree.
Find someone that is compatible with your personality. This lawyer will not only have to handle talking to you about one of the more important events of your life, he will need to juggle the various personalities of the Prosecutor, Judge, Clerks, and Police Officers during the various phases of the case.
Take time to get to know your attorney before you hire them to represent you on your DUI. This will save you grief in the future.
